This Week's Prayer

May 13-19, 2008:

This week's prayer is from Evolving Thanks, a prayer for Science and Technology Sunday, May 18:

We praise you, O God, for creating us in your image and entrusting us with the stewardship of all you have made. Let us work with you to extend your creativity in the world for the benefit of all. Let us rest in you to grow ever more confident in your goodness, and to celebrate that goodness evolving throughout all creation.

Delwyn R. Rayson

Former Church of the Crossroads Pastor Delwyn R. Rayson, 90, died April 22 in Minnesota. Delwyn served as pastor of the Honolulu church from 1960 to 1969. In addition to serving Church of the Crossroads during a time of great change, his strong sense of social justice called him to Mississippi to march with Martin Luther King, Jr., for voter registration and to be a laborer on a re-forestation project in Nicaragua.

Delwyn is survived by his four children, Leslie, Chris, Debby and David; their spouses, children and grandchildren; brother Glen, sister Rohanna, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 3, 10:00 a.m., at St. Anthony Park UCC, 2129 Commonwealth Avenue, St. Paul, Minnesota.

Help Make Your Church Accesible to All

These resources are meant to help churches, associations, and conferences as they seek to be accessible to all.  Click

OGHS Fund to Help Victims of the Earthquake in China
Thousands were confirmed dead when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southwest China on May 12. Buildings collapsed, leaving people trapped in the rubble. A day after the quake, rescue workers were still trying to reach the epicenter in Sichuan Province. The state-run Chinese news agency Xinhua reports the death toll is now nearly 12,000 and looks set to rise. Bad weather has created more suffering as surivors are forced to sleep outside in the rain, fearing that one of the hundreds of aftershocks will cause their homes to collapse.

The United Church of Christ has already responded with an initial grant from the One Great Hour of Sharing International Disaster Fund, which has been sent to one of our partner organizations, Amity Foundation, to support relief efforts. Amity is distributing shelter materials, rice, water, quilts, clothes, and medicines to survivors. The UCC will continue to work with partner churches and organizations in the region as the needs for relief and recovery become more clear.

Your donations are needed and you may donate through your local church or you can click HERE to donate through the UCC website.

Resources: Conversation on Race, Controversy over Jeremiah Wright

Helpful responses were also offered recently by veteran journalist and UCC member Bill Moyers, on the May 2 installment of Bill Moyers Journal on PBS; and from John H. Thomas, UCC General Minister and President, in a pastoral letter sent May 1.

Moyers remarks appear in United Church News with permission to reprint. Watch the video or read the transcript

Myanmar Residents Need Our Prayers and Help
The death toll in Myanmar (Burma) is now over 22,000 as rescue workers continue to look for survivors after Tropical Cyclone Nargis left its devastation. In addition to keeping the residents of Myanmar in your prayers, the UCC is inviting people to donate to the One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) International Emergency Relief Fund. The money will be used for immediate relief as well as long-term recovery efforts. An immediate grant of $5,000 from the OGHS International Emergency fund has already been sent to the country.

There has been much said in the news about the inability to get aid to the people in Myanmar who need it. Global Ministries Southern Asia Office and the Church World Service Asian Regional Office are in direct contact with the Myanmar Council of Churches. Through partner churches in the region and with the help of special bank accounts set up through Church World Service, gifts to One Great Hour of Sharing's Disaster Appeal for the Victims of the cyclone in Myanmar are able to reach the people who need it.

You can donate to this relief effort through your local church or click HERE to donate online to the OGHS International Emergency Relief Fund.
